Toastmasters Communication & Leadership Program
- Learn to communicate
by speaking to others in a supportive atmosphere.
- Polish your
leadership skills by giving constructive feedback
and evaluation, and participating in chairing and
facilitating roles.
This program has been
conducted by St George Toastmasters since 1991, using
concepts and materials proven in the Toastmasters program
throughout the world over the past 75 years.
Each session includes at
least two educational presentations from experienced
Toastmasters. Subjects include: speaking off the cuff,
using humour and using a projector.
Each session gives each
participant an opportunity to practice:
- Giving impromptu
speeches. Participants present one-to two-minute
impromptu speeches on assigned topics.
- Presenting prepared
speeches. Each participant is invited to present
a speech on a topic that they choose, using
guidelines from the Toastmasters International
Communication and Leadership Program manual.
Projects cover such topics as speech organisation,
voice, language, gestures, and persuasion.
- Offering constructive
evaluation. Every prepared speaker is assigned an
evaluator who points out speech strengths and
offers suggestions for improvement.
Each participant who makes
ten speeches during the program will be recognised as a
Competent Toastmaster by Toastmasters International. A
letter from the world headquarters in the United States
will be sent to the participant's employer, if they wish.
Each participant will be
assigned an experienced mentor who will be available to
advise on speech preparation during the program.
The Tools You Use.
Each participant receives a variety of manuals and
resources on speaking. They also receive a six month
subscription to the award-winning "Toastmaster",
a monthly magazine that offers the latest insights on
speaking and leadership techniques.
Toastmasters and
Leadership.
Leadership cannot be learned instantaneously. It takes
practice. In this program, participants build leadership
skills by taking on organisational roles, providing
constructive feedback, setting achievable goals, and
participating as member of a team learning program. Just
as participants learn to speak by speaking, they learn
leadership by leading.

Community Benefits.
Toastmasters has helped many members in their community
service activities. Using the speaking and leadership
skills developed in Toastmasters, people have become more
active in business, churches, and service and charity
organizations. Toastmasters members are able to organise
activities, conduct meetings, and speak in public as
their organisation's representative. Some even become
active in local, state or national government.
About Toastmasters
International.
Toastmasters International is a non-profit organisation.
The first Toastmasters club was established on October 22,
1924, in Santa Ana, California, by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley,
who conceived and developed the idea of helping others to
speak more effectively. More clubs were formed, and
Toastmasters International was incorporated under
California law on December 19, 1932. The first
Toastmasters club in Australia was formed in 1957. St
George Toastmasters was established in 1966.
Toastmasters do not employ
paid promoters or instructors. The program is conducted
by members, who have learned to communicate by applying
the Toastmasters program materials and activities to
their own experiences.
Personal Benefits
In addition to the many career and community benefits,

George Toastmasters club until October 2001 and the
